Jesus proclaimed His authority over
heaven and earth. On the basis of that authority, He commanded the disciples
to make, train, and commit other disciples to Himself. This was to be the
world-wide (every nation) be made, baptized, and taught. The power
required for the task is assured by the promise that He who has all power
will be with those who are engaged in the task "even unto the end of the
world." Just as "all nations" define the scope of the mandate, "unto the
end of the world" defines the time factor. It should be obvious to all
students of the New Testament that the responsibility for the fulfilment
of a task of this magnitude program of the Risen Christ. He commanded them to
go into all the world preaching the Gospel. As the Gospel is preached,
disciples are to would not have been given to an Apostolic office
which would cease with the death of that generation. Neither is it feasible
to think that it would be passed on from one disciple to another for 2000
years. The authority for the Great Commission was given to the church.
It is the responsibility of every believer to support his or her local
church with time, talent and resources in the fulfilment of the Great Commission.
The Great Commission when properly carried out will not only result in
new believers, but also in new churches, especially in the here-to-fore
unevangelized parts of the world (Matthew 28:18-20
- Mark 16:15 - Luke 24:47 - Acts
1:8).
