I came from a Chinese ancestor-worshipping
family. My mother did not understand why she was offering incense papers
and joss sticks to the dead. All she feared was that her mother-in-law
and the throngs of relatives would accuse her of not showing filial piety
to the elders if she was not religiously worshipping the ancestors. My
father does not believe in God. My two sisters and I went with Mother to
the temples and burned joss sticks just like Mother did.
On 1 September 1980 (I was twelve
then), God apprehended my heart. I was invited to a Juniors Fellowship
at Singapore Bible Baptist Church, now my home church. The preacher expounded
on John 3:16. I realised that I was a sinner who needed God to forgive
my sins and I accepted Jesus as my Saviour and Lord of my life.
Attending church was difficult
because of my parents' disapproval. I had to give excuses to go to church.
Two years later, on 7 February 1982, I was scripturally baptised by immersion
and since then, I have been in the service of the King of kings and Lord
of lords.
My parents' disapproval did
not last long. My mother was ill with cancer. About a year before she went
home to be with the Lord, she accepted Jesus as her Saviour. Attending
church together with my mother became an unspeakable joy. There were reasons
and not excuses to go to church. My mother stopped worshipping the ancestors
and started fearing our Almighty God.
God spoke to my heart at our
Missions Conference on 26 March 1989. I walked the aisle and dedicated
my life for full-time church service and mission work. God granted me countless
blessing-laden and humbling experience in Sunday School teaching, Choir
singing, Youth Ministry administration, Children Ministry assistance, Church
Secretarial administration and Church Treasury management. All glory and
honour go to our loving God who had engineered my life and had prepared
me for a mission field.
In God's sovereign plan, He
had also prepared Jason Goh (my boyfriend then) for the mission field of
Thailand. I thank the Lord for directing two different lives to become
one not only in matrimony, but also in mission work.
We arrived in Thailand as missionaries
on 18 January 1999. We are enjoying every moment here. People need the
Lord ~ Yes, the Thais need the Lord. Please pray for the GOHs as we go.
